Evaluates, selects and executes standard and advanced scientific techniques used in diagnostic laboratory functions, provides assistance to professional staff.
Responsibilities:
-Participate in sample processing by retrieving samples, ensuring samples are properly accessioned, entering case data into database, ensuring samples are fit for purpose of test, review submittal forms and interpret test requests/client instructions, initiate resolution of errors, file/catalog positive samples, slides, paraffin blocks, specimens or other diagnostic material, mix reagents and buffers, package and ship samples to other labs.
-Coordinate testing, perform quality control and/or maintenance of equipment, perform advanced test methods requiring subjective evaluation and analysis of controls required, troubleshoot routine assay and instrument problems, serve as subject matter specialist for specific test methods/techniques, prepare reagents, standards and controls, answer complex/advanced questions about tests.
-Triage simple and complex calls from clients to appropriate professional staff, communicate test results, interact with students, tour groups and others training in the section. Assist section managers with audits, adhere to and conform with quality assurance and safety programs and procedures. Review documents to ensure clarity of instructions, write and/or edit complex SOPs, forms and other documents, prepare reports on special assignments.
-Assist in new assay development and validation, manage inventory and procurement process for laboratory supplies, order or approve purchase of supplies, file, copy and scan relevant paperwork, train staff in organization of samples, paperwork, sample preparation, test methodology and result entry, may supervise student assistants or other technicians.Position: Technician III – Apiculture (12-month), Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, Texas A&M AgriLife Research and Extension Center at OvertonOverview: This position is located within the Texas A&M AgriLife Research and Extension Center in Overton, Texas. Funding is provided by the Texas State Legislature and continued employment is dependent upon funding availability.In this position, you will participate in the research process by performing a wide range of technical duties related to honey bee colony establishment and their maintenance. You will perform sample collection and data recording with respect to colony health and population metrics.Texas A&M AgriLife Research and Extension Center at Overton: The Overton Center is located in Northeast Texas and constitutes one of the main hubs for beekeeping industry in Texas. The Overton Center is located in 1710 N. FM 3053, Overton, TX 75684. The Overton Center houses 11 Research and Extension faculty. Facilities includes greenhouses, laboratory and office space, and an auditorium. Research can be conducted in greenhouse, laboratory, and at three research farms totaling 1,650 acres.Primary Responsibilities:Assists with the testing and breeding for honey bee resistant traits and genetics.Maintains, calibrates, and modified equipment and automated systems used for test and evaluation procedures.Collects, prepares, evaluates, and verifies bee samples and supporting records.Maintains inventory of chemicals and safely disposes of waste material (both chemical and biological) in the lab.Assists in one ore more phases of the research process related to bees by performing a variety of technical duties in a field environment.Assists with tasks in the laboratory such as: sample processing, insect dissection, behavioral- and bio-assays, or standard molecular techniques.Required Education and Experience:Bachelor’s degree in a related field or an equivalent combination of training and experienceThree years of related experience.Desirables Qualifications:Advanced knowledge and expertise in honey bee biology and beekeeping.The ideal candidate will have experience in queen production, breeding, and Instrumental Insemination.Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:-Knowledge of laboratory equipment, scientific apparatus, and computer equipment.-Skilled in use of relevant laboratory equipment, scientific apparatus, and computer equipment. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.-Ensure attention to detail.
