Announcement InformationJob SummaryThe Oberlin College and Conservatory of Music invites applications for an Administrative and Professional Staff (A&PS) position as Technical Director for the Technology in Music and Related Arts (TIMARA) Department beginning August 1, 2024. This is a full-time, 12-month, continuing position.The TIMARA Department offers a four-year curriculum leading to a Bachelor of Music degree. There are four full-time teaching faculty and a full-time Technical Director. TIMARA houses approximately 30 majors and serves many other Oberlin students and faculty through courses, projects, concerts, and special events.The TIMARA studio complex includes a recording studio and control room, a multi-channel diffusion studio, an analog and digital synthesizer studio, a post-production studio, a makerspace, a performance technology lab, and a wide variety of equipment for check-out.
ResponsibilitiesThe TIMARA department seeks a colleague who will manage the TIMARA studios and equipment, support the curricular program, support faculty and student creative projects and research, and oversee concert and event production and documentation.The ideal candidate has excellent attention to detail and exceptional organizational and communication skills. This candidate will support the world-class music studios at Oberlin Conservatory of Music and play a pivotal role in supporting the TIMARA department's events, projects, and development.Reporting to the Associate Dean for Artistic Administration and Operations and working under the direction of the TIMARA Department Chair, the Technical Director will support the operations, maintenance, and functionality of the TIMARA studios and its equipment. They will oversee and maintain all TIMARA facilities and equipment, provide logistical and on-the-ground support for departmental concerts and other events, coordinate audio/visual documentation, schedule studio access, and manage and train student workers.The Technical Director may occasionally be asked to teach based on departmental need.Essential Job FunctionsGeneral
  • Support student-centered learning and the creative mission of the TIMARA Department, which fosters academic excellence, professional development, creativity, and community within the department.
  • Assume responsibility for learning new technologies as needed for a vibrant community of faculty and students.
  • Provide technical support to TIMARA faculty and students.
Studios
  • Oversee and maintain TIMARA studios, classrooms, and equipment, including vintage analog synthesizers, audio routing and monitoring (stereo, multi-channel, binaural, audio over IP, etc.), video projection, lighting systems, and makerspace fabrication equipment.
  • Serve as property operations and maintenance point of contact for the TIMARA studios; initiate work requests, monitor completion; coordinate and monitor routine maintenance services completion (trash, utilities, custodial, pest control, and long term preservation).
  • Document the proper set up and use of spaces and assure TIMARA studios, teaching spaces, and faculty offices are fully operational.
  • Oversee and manage scheduling of departmental spaces and access to spaces.
  • Implement facility security programs by distributing keys, providing building access, and assessing security infrastructure needs.
Hardware / Software
  • Demonstrate and maintain familiarity with current audio/visual equipment, production workflows, and industry best practices. Research potential purchases to support departmental initiatives driven by faculty research and course offerings.
  • Manage departmental computers and software licenses, and coordinate compatible versions and platforms (ProTools, Logic, Max, Live, REAPER, SuperCollider, QLab, Touch Designer, Isadora, Izotope, Waves, Arturia, Adobe Suite, plug-ins, etc.)
  • Manage and maintain TIMARA's inventory of departmental equipment, including overseeing lending equipment to students and faculty. Conduct annual inventory assessment.
Budget
  • Under supervision of the Associate Dean for Artistic Administration and Operations and TIMARA department chair, track TIMARA departmental budget and purchasing and support contracting of third-party vendors when necessary.
Events
  • Provide logistical planning and on-the-ground support for departmental events including faculty and student concerts; guest artist visits, and other projects.
  • Run event technology as needed and ensure professional documentation.
  • Oversee student assistants to set up and break down concerts and help as appropriate.
  • Support TIMARA summer programming, including the Sonic Arts Workshop.
Misc
  • Work closely with partner organizations across campus, including Conservatory Audio, Concert Sound, Concert Production, the Center for Information Technology, Facilities, Communications, and Campus Safety.
  • Oversee and maintain the TIMARA Website.
  • Train, support, and supervise departmental student workers.

Required QualificationsEducation
  • Bachelor's degree in music technology, recording, engineering, or related field required. Master's degree and/or 3 years of professional experience preferred.
General
  • High level of organizational ability; ability to set priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to coordinate and manage multiple projects with competing priorities, meet deadlines and project plans with short- and long-term end dates.
  • Strong supervisory skills and willingness to work with and train student assistants. Demonstrated management experience preferred.
  • Self-motivated, demonstrates initiative, flexibility, maturity under pressure, and anticipates and resolves problems before they develop.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, mature judgment required to interact effectively with a broad range of people, including faculty, students, staff, and vendors.

Studios
  • Demonstrated ability to evaluate studio and classroom equipment requirements, prepare and maintain budgets, and implement development plans.
  • Experience in facilitating access for users with varying skills sets, physical capabilities, and previous experiences.
Hardware / Software
  • Working knowledge of techniques and standards of current electronic music systems, professional audio and music technology, analog and digital synthesis, and a variety of current software music systems (DAWs, synthesis and compositional language systems, and other music applications).
  • Experience installing, maintaining, using, and repairing audio/visual systems used in studio, classroom, and live performance.
  • Experience maintaining vintage analog synthesizers and reel-to-reel machines.
  • Familiarity with A/V protocols including MIDI, OSC, MADI, Dante, NDI, etc.
  • Working knowledge of performance lighting.
  • Ability to quickly and efficiently troubleshoot software, hardware, and A/V systems.
Budget
  • Experience working with internal and external vendors and services contracting.
Events
  • Adaptable to a flexible schedule to accommodate peak academic periods and events outside of business hours; includes evenings and weekends.
  • Experience overseeing or running performances or productions, including working with house staff, students, professional musicians and/or faculty.
  • Experience in live sound reinforcement, using current digital mixing consoles.
  • Experience with audio/visual documentation.
Misc
  • Experience working with Google Suite, website maintenance, and social media platforms.
Working Conditions

  • Ability to safely perform the physical requirements necessary to move light to moderate objects up to 50 lbs.
