Azusa Pacific University is an NCAA school with 16 intercollegiate sports. The position is a 10-month appointment with full benefits.Required Education
  • Master’s Degree in a related field. Certification through the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Board of Certification.
Required ExperienceOne year clinical athletic training experience at the university level through education program.Primary Duties/Essential FunctionsAthletic Care and Coverage
  • Participate in an athletic training program that meets the health care needs of all student-athletes (approximately 375 athletes on 16 teams) including the prevention, assessment, care, management, rehabilitation, healthcare administration, and education and guidance of the injuries sustained in Azusa Pacific University (APU) intercollegiate athletics.
  • Responsible for the coverage of specific athletic teams. Communicate with coaches regarding practice and game coverage.
  • Travel with above-mentioned teams whenever coverage on campus permits. Travel with teams when traveling out of state, to playoffs and to National Tournaments.
  • Responsible for the coverage of open rehabilitation times in the morning and afternoon as determined by the Head Athletic Trainer.
Determining Medical Clearance
  • Participate in team physicals in consultation with the APU Student Health Center and Team Physicians. Duties include performing orthopedic exams, seeking physician referrals for athletes with significant pre- existing injuries, and notifying coaches of student-athlete clearance or non-clearance of physical exam.
  • Assist student-athletes with health care needs and concerns and make appropriate referrals as needed. Stay in communication with attending physicians regarding prognosis and orders for injured student- athletes.
  • Communicate with the Student Health Center and Team Physicians and coordinate patient referrals as needed for outside medical service.
  • Assist student-athletes in scheduling physician appointments per individual insurance requirements.
  • Communicate with coaches regarding the health status of the student-athletes.
  • Evaluate the readiness of student-athletes to return to physical activity in coordination with physician and other health care professionals when necessary.
Administration
  • Assist the Head Athletic Trainer in maintaining, and annually updating policies and procedures for the Sports Medicine Clinic (SMC) in the Sports Medicine Manual of Policies and Procedures.
  • Assist the Head Athletic Trainer in maintaining an Emergency Action Plan for all sporting venues, and in reviewing policies and procedures with all sports medicine staff.
  • Participate in weekly meetings with the sports medicine staff to coordinate coverage and other pertinent information.
  • Assist the Head Athletic Trainer in writing an annual end of year athletic training injury report.
  • Attend athletic department staff meetings.
  • Attend annual continuing education and educate the sports medicine staff on the education program.
  • Assist the Head Athletic Trainer with implementing a workable budget for the needs of the sports medicine program. This includes annual inventory, bidding, budgeting, and ordering.
  • Supervise the service and repairs of the equipment through facilities management and institute procedures for the repairs of the equipment as needed.
  • Supervise Graduate Intern athletic trainers as assigned. This includes, but is not limited to, injured student-athlete chart reviews, weekly coaches’ report reviews, and supervision of student athletic trainers assigned under graduate assistants.
  • Meet with assigned teams regarding athletic insurance policies, SMC rules and procedures, collection of emergency and physical information, and answer questions regarding health care at APU.
  • Participate in and help coordinate drug testing of student-athletes in conjunction with the Athletic Director.
  • Take part in a confidential system that maintains medical records and accurate injury/illness reports of all injuries. Maintain an individual chart of records for each student-athlete. Such charts will include physical paperwork, insurance and emergency contact information, injury reports, treatment records, physician reports and clearances. This also includes the use of injury tracking software for the purpose of injury recording, maintaining progress notes, coaches reports, compiling statistics and producing year end reports.
  • Coordinate coverage for home events and tournaments of assigned sports including Certified Athletic Trainers, athletic training students and physicians and EMS when necessary.
  • Assist the Head Athletic Trainer in administrative duties as assigned.
  • Responsible for administrative duties and assignments as assigned.
Skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively with the public, staff, faculty and students with proper English usage.
  • Good organizational and planning skills.
  • First Aid and CPR, as well as skills in the following areas: injury assessment, care, treatment, rehabilitation, manual therapy techniques.
  • Administrative skills in record keeping, charting, computer skills with basic programs as well as athletic training software.
  • People skills are also necessary in working with a diverse variety of people.

  • Be able to perform the manual tasks associated with manual therapy for both evaluation and rehabilitation of athletic injuries.

  • Reading, writing notes, and computer monitor.
  • Visual acuity necessary for evaluations and wound debridement
Environment
  • Pleasant office, comfortable temperature, as well as a variety of temperature differences from extreme heat to extreme cold.
