The DNR Product Sales and Leasing Division, product sales program is seeking a forester to create and implement a new program to increase the amount of cedar salvage and hardwood timber sales offered for auction. Do you possess journey-level forestry knowledge and desire an opportunity to develop new skills? This position will challenge your knowledge and skills through the creation of expanded opportunities in niche markets for forest products. This position will establish methods to bring more hardwood timber and cedar salvage to auction and author a report for the State Legislature. This position involves traveling to potential sale areas in both southwest Washington and the Olympic Peninsula while interacting closely with other DNR foresters and timber purchasers. To be successful in this position you will need a strong understanding of natural resource management, the state lands Habitat Conservation Plan, as well as the policy and regulatory environment in which we operate. This position requires an excellent understanding of project management principles and ongoing frequent cooperative communication to ensure that the project goals are met.   • Identify currently planned (Fiscal Year 2024-2025) cedar-salvage and hardwood-dominated sales in the Pacific Cascade and Olympic Regions. Identify and design potential additional sales in these categories that can be offered for sale.
  • Create and maintain a tracking system for costs and revenues associated with the hardwoods-dominated and cedar-salvage sales associated with this project.
  • Identify key stakeholders and establish regular communications on project progress.
  • Contract Administration: Ensure contracts offered under this project are completed in accordance with contract terms.
  • Design reports to communicate key metrics and summarized findings for state uplands managers, and the Washington State Legislature.
QualificationsRequired Qualifications:
  • A Bachelor's Degree in Forestry or a related field;
OR 4 years of professional-level forest management experience;
OR equivalent combination of experience and/or education. * Demonstrated regard for safety in all aspects of the working environment.
  • Experience in applying theory, policy, principles, and practices of the forestry profession as applied to the Northwestern United States (i.e. fundamentals of silviculture of northwest species, markets and economics, cruising methods, sales layout, logging methods, forest road engineering, intensive forest management practices, recreation, multiple uses, inventory, and water quality considerations.
  • Demonstrated familiarity with current forest practices regulations, State Uplands Habitat Conservation Plan, and associated agency policies and procedures.
  • Professional experience in the application of forest management objectives and timber management planning.
  • Experience preparing and/or managing timber sales contracts.
  • Experience with ground and cable logging systems, and forest road construction.
  • Experience with, and understanding of Forest Practices rules, natural resources law, and practices.
  • Demonstrated proficient experience with computer applications such as Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Experience with GPS technology and GIS mapping products.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Pacific Northwest hardwoods and cedar salvage wood products.
  • Strong written and verbal communication.
  • Strong facilitation and negotiation skills.
  • Effective customer service skills to build and maintain internal and external customer satisfaction.

Special Requirements and Conditions of Employment:
  • Field, office, and home office. Occasional overnight travel may be needed to complete fieldwork in remote locations. Travel needs are likely to be inconsistent and will depend on fieldwork locations relative to employee residence. The maximum likely would be 3 days per week; the more probable scenario would be 3-5 days per month.
  • A valid unrestricted driver's license and have two years of driving experience. This position requires driving as an essential function. Finalists and/or interview candidates will be asked to provide a driving record from all states in which they have held a license during the past three years.
Desired Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Forest Management or a related field and at least 4 years of professional experience.
  • Experience working at a Hardwoods or Cedar Salvage facility, or experience procuring product for one.
