- Design reviews and continuous improvement activities
- Justification of design proposals through engineering calculations, analysis, modelling, and creation of supporting engineering documentation
- Product development planning
- Component specification creation
- Engineering Change Requests
- Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA)
- Design Verification Plan (DVP) definition
- Root cause analysis and problem solving
- Design optimization (Cost and quality improvements)
- Integration of Westport components and systems with various OEM vehicles and configurations
- Promotion of components by ensuring they meet their technical requirements, following the Westport Product Development Process (WPDP)
- Pre-production and production support
- Assisting in the creation of high quality production level drawing packages
- Supporting development of test and assembly fixtures related to a given Westport product
- Promote Westport's H&S culture following all Environmental, and H&S procedures and understanding your obligations and responsibilities
- Report unsafe conditions, behaviors and all accidents
- Co-operate with JHSC (Joint Health & Safety Committee) and Safety representative
- Mechanical Engineering or similar degree
- Experience in a Product Development or Design Engineering role
- Proven mechanical aptitude and understanding of fundamental mechanical engineering concepts
- Experience conceptualizing and designing complex mechanical systems and assemblies interlinked by mechanical and fluid systems
- Knowledge of 3D modeling and creation of 2D drawings using an industry recognized CAD software package (experience with PTC Creo is an asset)
- Knowledge of standard drawing practices including ASME Y14.5M or ISO Standards (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing [GD&T])
- Knowledge of properties of materials and manufacturing techniques
- Knowledge of fluid dynamics and heat transfer
- Experience with product development processes such as Requirement Documentation, Verification and Validation Plans and Reports, and DFMEA's
- Ability to justify design decisions with calculations and written documentation
- Ability to use Microsoft Office Products such as Word and Excel or equivalent software
- Proven ability to learn quickly and initiative for self-improvement
- Process oriented
- Good verbal and written communication skills in English and ability to work well within a team
- Ability to communicate effectively on technical matters with colleagues, customers, and suppliers
- A high degree of creativity but also the ability to translate concepts into practical products
- Self-motivated and capable of working independently with strong sense of ownership
- Organized and uses time effectively
- Knowledge of APQP and PPAP processes
- Knowledge of Diesel engine basics
- Knowledge of thermodynamics and mechanical dynamics
- Knowledge of materials compatible with natural gas (CNG/LNG), Diesel, Hydrogen
- Knowledge of FEA or fluid dynamic modeling is an asset
- General understanding of manufacturing processes and relevant design standards including NFPA-52, FMVSS-304, NGV, CSA, ISO, ECE-R110, ASME B&PV Section VIII
- Experience with cryogenic design (pumping, sealing, vaporizing, and storage)
- Experience with heavy duty, rail, automotive, or mobile equipment design
- Experience with fluid or gaseous seals
- Experience with fuel injection systems
- Knowledge of statistical methods and data analysis
- Familiar with PTC Creo Parametric, Windchill, and Integrity
- Experience with BOM creation and management
