Each department showcases a student first mentality and is passionate about sharing their knowledge, skills and abilities with those around them.The RoleThe Mental Health Counselor will provide comprehensive and emergent mental health supports to the programs developed by the Psychologist and to students (and staff, if necessary) at the Grande Prairie campus in order to expand the mental health services available to all. The Mental Health Counselor will provide mental health/crisis counseling and mental health awareness, as well as make referrals to the Psychologist and community resources, as necessary. Some travel to Fairview campus may be required, and there may be some infrequent evenings requiring participation during student events. This position also provides preventative education/programming to staff and students to reduce risk in terms of student mental/physical health and institutional reputation. This is a part-time (0.60) term-certain appointment (21 hours per week) with specific schedule to be discussed with successful candidate. This position has an employment term until June 30, 2025 with a possibility of renewal subject to evaluation and budget.   • Collaborate with the Psychologist in providing expert and timely mental health services to students.
  • Collaborate with the Psychologist in developing preventative and educational mental health programming for students.
  • Collaborate with the Psychologist in offering a variety of mental health services to reduce the risks to student health and provide students with options to be successful.
  • Liaise with other mental health care providers in NWP's stewardship region.

Maintain licensure and good standing with an appropriate professional regulatory body (e.g. College of Alberta Psychologists (CAP); Alberta College of Social Workers; OR membership in good standing with the Association of Counselling Therapists of Alberta (ACTA) or the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (CCPA) as a Canadian Certified Counsellor (CCC) is required. A combination of relevant education and experience will be considered. Depending on student programming (e.g. trades/apprenticeship programs), a counselling appointment may occur or extend outside regular hours to accommodate reasonable scheduling needs.Necessary skills and attributes to be successful in this role include:
  • Experience in counselling and crisis intervention;
  • Ability to build and maintain strong relationships across the organization;
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Creative problem solving and critical thinking skills;
  • A high level of integrity, professionalism and accountability;
  • Strong organizational and multi-tasking skills;
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook;
  • A Class 5 Driver's License is required.
