Spectrum Resource GroupJOB SUMMARY: Wright Canada Holdings, operating as the Spectrum Resource Group, is seeking Support Staff (Checkers) for the 2024 planting season beginning mid-April through to mid-August. We have 14 million seedlings to plant! Tree planting is one of the toughest jobs on the continent and a skilled and experienced team is required to support the operations. Compensation is competitive, based on industry experience and paid as a day rate. Over the last 37 years we have employed thousands of tree planters to restore hundreds of thousands of hectares of land disturbed by logging, mining and oil and gas. Come join the management team of one of the longest running and most reliable tree planting companies in the country!Spectrum’s Support Staff compensation is competitive with other tree planting companies with statutory holiday pay and vacation pay.Spectrum’s tree planting camps are remote bush camps. Spectrum tree planting camps have a kitchen with meals provided, dining tents, bathrooms, shower facilities, first aid rooms, drinking water and Starlink internet access. Shift schedule is 3 days on, 1 day off rotation but are subject to change as a support staff member. Support Staff can expect training and mentorship from supervisors before the season and throughout. We maintain a proactive approach to safety and injury prevention with camp first aid attendants and training from industry leading physio therapists on injury prevention and management techniques.The Reforestation Support Staff member primarily monitors quality on the block, inspects worksites to ensure OH&S compliance, completes duties around camp and tasks required by the camp supervisor. The Support Staff is also responsible for leading teams during camp set up and take down. Ideal candidates have strong leadership skills, can inspire those around them and perform well under pressure.Support Staff are responsible for bringing their own sleeping accommodation (e.g., tent, trailer), personal items including clothing, footwear, and toiletries. Spectrum has opportunities to continue working beyond the tree planting season.JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Report to and follow instruction from the camp supervisor.
  • Ensure a safe and productive working environment for employees.
  • Work quality inspections, sample/audit plots, worksite inspections and review of OH&S documentation.
  • Participate in daily tailgate meetings, assess worksites for hazards, inspect vehicles and equipment, ensure first aid requirements are being met and document accordingly.
  • Participate in drills as required.
  • Lead camp set up and take down.
  • Maintain camp infrastructure as required.
  • Maintain work area, storage area, and equipment in a condition that promotes good safety practices and in compliance.
  • Maintain vehicles and equipment as required
  • Occasionally lead crews or special planting missions.
  • Occasionally planting trees.
  • Walking long distances.
  • Working alone.
  • Load/unload and transport boxes of seedlings while maintaining best practices for stock handling.
  • Motivate and inspire those on your team to perform to their fullest potential.
  • Communicate with clients and their representatives, maintain a good working relationship.
  • Safely operate large trucks on resource roads.
  • Safely operate all-terrain vehicles off road.
  • Maintain regular and punctual attendance at work and meetings.
  • Comply with applicable federal, provincial, and local laws, rules, and regulations; maintain knowledge of and follow all company policies and procedures.
  • Support, actively participate, and act in accordance with Spectrum and Wright Canada Holdings culture of safety and employee ownership.
  • Position will require travel.
  • During emergencies or natural disasters, may be required to be on duty for the duration of the disaster.

  • Minimum of 2 seasons of tree planting experience.
  • Valid British Columbia Class 5 Driver’s License and a current Driver’s Abstract.
  • Experience driving large trucks with trailers.
  • Experience operating all-terrain vehicles.
  • Map reading skills
  • Decision making skills.
  • Competent with technology, handheld devices, and software such as Avenza Maps, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Basic math skills.
  • Ability to adapt to a dynamic, fast-paced, and ever-changing environment.
  • Self-motivated and the ability to work well individually and as part of a team.
  • The physical ability to perform highly demanding role with the ability to carry 50+ pounds.
  • Preparation for work in all weather conditions and able to withstand exposure to all kinds of weather while completing work tasks such as rain, heat, sun, cold and snow.
  • Commitment to spring and summer plant (Early May to mid-August).
  • Organization of equipment before, during and after shifts will be required.
  • Demonstrate excellent focus on rapport-building, listening, questioning and patience. Communicate effectively with all levels of employees, both technical and non-technical.
  • Willingness to work, enjoy, and live in a remote setting.
  • Occupational First Aid (OFA) level 1 or greater is considered an asset.
  • Ability to read, write and speak English sufficient to perform job duties, understand instructions/information and to interact and communicate with employees, clients, and vendors.
  • Pre-employment drug and alcohol testing required for safety sensitive positions.
