The Centre for Digital Cultures and Societies ( ) and ARC Centre of Excellence for Automated Decision-Making and Society ( ) are seeking a Software Developer who will work with researchers in the DCS and ADM+S to provide support for the development, implementation, maintenance and uptake of digital research tools and platforms. They will assist with researcher consultation and training as required.From this role, it is expected that the successful applicant will have an opportunity to extend upon their communication skills with researchers, and collaboration with senior software developers. The applicant will also be acquainted with the conventions of working in research environments, and in receiving meaningful feedback on the development of a software artifact that will be used by various members of community organizations.Reporting to the Director, The Centre for Digital Cultures and Societies, and working collaboratively with of staff from DCS and ADM+S, the role is responsible for providing development and support for software applications for both Centres.Key responsibilities will include:Design, analysis, implementation, installation, and maintenance of information technology systems and infrastructure. This includes developing a desktop application that reads, extracts, and organises data from Freedom of Information (FOI) PDF documents, to support welfare rights advocacy as part of the projectProvide higher level support and maintenance of information technology infrastructure including:Deploy Node JS software development, for the purpose of designing local web applicationsApply pre-developed machine learning packages and surveying results generated from these packages for integration with desired computational processesDiagnosing and responding to problems and faultsProviding phone and email support to research team and partnersLiaising with other staff and external service providers regarding more advanced problems, development or systems administration and providing support to those staff when required.Undertake design and development of significant information technology projectsInvestigate, evaluate and report on new software solutions, systems, processes, and standards.Undertake tasks such as (but not limited to) assisting the Team Lead in preparation of business cases and project plans (in support of technical tasks). This includes:Communicating and managing project with senior software developers and researchers.Demonstrate excellent communication skills and self-management practices, as they will be delegated tasks from senior software developer and various researchers.Consulting on the technical aspects of information technology to research staff as required.This is a full-time, fixed-term position for up to two years.At HEW level 6, the full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range $88,099 - $94,512, plus a generous super allowance of up to 17%. The total FTE package will be up to $103,076 - $110,579 annually. As these roles are covered by an Enterprise Agreement, you will also receive regular remuneration increases in line with the Enterprise Agreement.About YouOur ideal candidate will be a self-motivated, solutions focused Software Developer with excellent communication skills.Qualifications and training equivalent to an undergraduate degree in IT or related field with subsequent relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training.Skills and experience in analysis, design, development, systems management and maintenance of multi-user systems or applications.Detailed knowledge in the following areas, with significant experience in:Knowledge of software package integration, with a preference for experience in working with packages that specifically involve computational vision tasks, such as in the manner of OCR (optical character recognition).Knowledge in the Node JS programming language, for the development of software artifacts that operate within local environments.Rapid web applications that involve the creation of web browser interfaces that implement Bootstrap and JavaScript programming conventions.Familiarity with document management software (e.g., Adobe Acrobat PDF readers) and development of computational techniques to interact with document layouts.Experience and proficiency in working with sensitive documents, following security protocols to facilitate adequate storage and management of data in compliance to ethical standards.DesirableExperience working in a team using Agile software development methods.Typescript, expert-level experience with Node.js software development ecosytems and intermediate level skills with UI development.Experience developing microservices using AWS Lambda serverless web solutions.Self-motivated and keen to learn new technologies to support evolving UQ’s technical framework.Ability to work under tight timelines and on multiple concurrent initiatives, and prioritise work based on urgency.In addition, the following mandatory requirements apply:Work Rights: You must have unrestricted work rights in Australia for the duration of this appointment to apply.
