Our client is seeking a full-time Fishing Hand and Seafood Worker to work in Port Burnie, Port Hobart and deep sea fishing for their Blue Grenadier Campaign, beginning mid-June 2024. Passionate about the sea, with opportunities to develop in the fishing industry while you work?...then this opportunity is not to be missed!Working on one of their Deepsea Trawlers, FV Tokatu or FV Rehua, your duties will include:
  • Handling ropes and wires, and operating mooring equipment when berthing and unberthing
  • Standing lookout watches at sea and adjusting the ship's course as directed
  • Assisting with cargo operations using on-board equipment and stowing and securing cargo
  • Patrolling ships to ensure safety of the vessel, cargo and passengers
  • Performing routine maintenance and checks on deck equipment, cargo gear, rigging, and lifesaving and firefighting appliances
  • Attaching gear and fastening towing cables to nets
  • Casting and lowering nets, pots, lines and traps into water
  • Hauling in fishing gear and removing fish and other marine life
  • Sorting, cleaning, preserving, stowing and refrigerating catch
  • Inspecting and grading fish and shellfish for size and quality
  • Packing fish and counting packs before freezing, and packing frozen fish blocks into cartons
  • Operating machines which slice, peel, skin and crumb fish
  • Cleaning and sanitising equipment and work areas
  • Wrapping protective material around products, sealing bags and containers, and attaching pre-printed labels
  • Recording information such as numbers, weight, times and dates
  • Operating controls to align forklifts and raise and lower forks to stack and unstack items in warehouses, factories, timber yards and shipping terminals
  • Transporting goods to designated areas in warehouses, factories, timber yards and shipping terminals.
To be successful in this position, you will need the following skills and experience:

Qualifications
  • Certificate II or III in relevant field
  • At least one (1) year of relevant experience may substitute for the formal qualifications listed
  • Forklift licence desirable (requirement for a set number of qualified forklift drivers across both crews)
  • Deckhand Ticket desirable (requirement for a set number of qualified deckhands across both crews)
Experience
  • Proven experience and up to date knowledge in vessel processing operations through time spent at sea over the last 24 months
Skills and Knowledge
  • Observant
  • Work as team
  • Ability to receive and follow instruction
  • High level of physical fitness
  • Communication skills
Trip lengths on the vessels range from 4 - 6 weeks and crew operate on a trip on, trip off rotation. The hours of work are generally shift rotations of 8 hours on and 8 hours off and all meals provided by our experienced cooks. This is for a fixed term period from mid-June to mid-Sept. There are also opportunities for development and progressions both in Australian and New Zealand operations.Being at sea is a way of life; unique and exhilarating!
