This person will support data exploitation activities on behalf of ESA, so we are currently looking for a skilled expert in the SAR R&D domain also with experience on Cryospheric Science to provide support to the Earth Observation Programmes Green Solutions Division of ESA/ESRIN. Through this task the Contractor shall support the Agency for technical activities related to the preparation, monitoring and management of EO applied research projects carried out by external scientists or industrial teams in the context of ESA data exploitation programmes.The position is for a specialist in EO remote sensing with experience in the field of SAR R&D, Cryospheric Science research, products, algorithms and applications.Role ResponsibilityReporting to the Serco Contract manager, main responsibilities are:
  • Perform literature survey and document state-of-the-art EO methodologies for science and application developments.
  • Support ESA Technical Officer in the different phases of projects.
  • Generation of scientific and technical notes whenever needed during the relevant project phases.
  • Participation to project meetings and reviews.
  • Support the review of technical deliverables from projects.
  • Follow related software algorithms development as well as tools, test them and report on development.
  • Propose and perform feasibility studies for new development and new areas for applications.
  • Interface new potential users, support tools/methods integration in ESA systems, deliver practical utilization and functioning exercises.
  • Handle data for exploitation activities.
  • Identify possible evolution for products, tools and methods.
  • Provide support to the organisation and running of scientific workshops, user consultation meetings and training courses.
Successful CandidateThe specialist will work in a team of multilingual experts. In order to answer to our current customers, we are looking for a candidate fluent in English. Additional language is an asset.The successful applicant will hold a master or higher degree in Physics, Remote Sensing or similar, have an in-depth knowledge of satellite remote sensing, and experience in massive remote sensing data processing and analysis, in particular of SAR sensors and in the Cryosphere field, in view of exploiting Sentinels and upcoming Earth Explorers and Copernicus missions.Other skills:
  • Scientific programming (e.g. Python, Jupiter notebooks, R, Matlab, C, C++).
  • Experience in data processing within a cloud environment.
  • Experience in sentinel data processing using ESA sentinel toolboxes.
  • Scientific and application project management.
  • Good technical and analytical skills.
  • Good documentation writing skills.
  • Good knowledge of the Cryosphere research community and key international scientific programmes.
  • Ability to manage several tasks in parallel and to prioritise.
  • Capability to work in a team.
  • Pro-active approach to problem identification and resolution.
  • Fluent English (written and spoken).
